Canstruction Seeks Teams for 2010 Design/Build Competition to Aid St. Mary's Food Bank AllianceCanstruction Design/Build Competition Call for Entries Now Available

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Society for Marketing Professional Services Arizona chapter, under the auspices of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), is now accepting team entries for the 4th annual Canstruction® competition to be held Feb. 19–20, 2010 at Fiesta Mall in Mesa.  Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry.

The Call for Entries may be downloaded at www.phoenixcanstruction.org.  A $150 entry fee and registration form are due Dec. 4 to SMPS Arizona.  The competition has limited space for teams.

Competing teams, led by architects, engineers and contactors, have the opportunity to showcase their talents by designing and building giant structures (10' x 10' x 8'h) made entirely out of canned foods.

Teams have 12 hours to build their structures, which will be on display for the public to see and vote for their favorite during mall hours at Fiesta Mall Feb. 20–27, 2010.

Canned food is donated to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance at the close of the exhibition and is the organization's largest single-event donation each year.

Awards will be given for Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Juror's Favorite and People's Choice.  Winners from the local competitions around the nation will compete in the national competition through a slide photography submission.

Visit www.phoenixcanstruction.org to download the Call for Entries and register a team for the event.  Follow Phoenix Canstruction on Twitter at www.twitter.com/phxcanstruction.

Canstruction® (www.canstruction.org) is a design/build competition showcasing the talents of design and construction industry professionals and students they mentor. At events held around the world, teams are given just 12 hours to defy expectations, logic, and gravity as they build fantastic sculptures from thousands of cans of food. Driven by the knowledge that their structures will change lives – by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by filling the shelves of local food banks – dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to bring their creations to life. The following day, the super-sized masterpieces are judged in a variety of categories as these unconventional art exhibits are opened to the public, the cost of admission – just one can of food.

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance (www.FirstFoodBank.org), the world's first food bank, is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that alleviates hunger by efficiently gathering and distributing food to more than 500 member agencies at 700 sites that serve the hungry. Serving 13 of Arizona's 15 counties, the organization is committed to volunteerism, building community relationships, and improving the quality of life for Arizonans in need. During Fiscal Year 2008-2009, the Food Bank will distribute more than 60 million pounds of food to families and individuals, provided enough food for 300,000 meals every day, and garnered more than 230,000 volunteer service hours.

The Society for Marketing Professional Services Arizona chapter (www.smpsarizona.org) was founded in 1983 and has grown to include more than 200 marketing professionals from the architecture, engineering and construction industry.  It is the only organization state-wide that gives A/E/C marketing professionals access to their collaborations, competitors and clients.  SMPS membership offers professional development seminars, programs on industry trends, panel discussions, networking events and a mentoring program.
